Belize

Belize National Cricket Association

Cricket has been playing in Belize since the 1950s according to most accounts. It is the most popular sport played in the Belize River Valley and is played in backyards, school grounds and in competitions by males and females. Up to the 1980s most children made their own equipment (bat, wicket, bail, ball) from locally available materials. Cricket in Belize is governed by the Belize National Cricket Association (BNCA). The executive of the Association is elected biennially. According to the International Cricket Council (ICC) scorecard ranking in 2020, Belize’s cricket was ranked 60th among 92 associate members in the world.
Each year the governing body for cricket in Belize, the BNCA host a senior men’s cricket competition in Belize District call the Sir Barry Bowen/Harrison Parks Cricket Competition in which approximately three hundred players from fourteen to sixteen teams participate. Teams from Cayo and Orange Walk Districts also participate in this fifty-over competition. In Belize before 2012, games were one-day matches using red balls and players wore white uniform. The games then were unlimited overs but were finished at six o’clock with a win or draw. Belize now play mainly fifty-over matches and some T20 games in which players wear colored uniform and use white balls to comply with ICC’s regulations. Belize became an associate member of ICC in 2007 which entitles the country to funding and assistance to develop the sport from ICC.

Cricket is now consistently played in Belize. For example, in 2019, competitive senior male and female cricket competitions were played in Belize rural. The Barry Bowen/Harrison Parks Cricket Competition, the main male competition, was played in the following villages in the Belize district: Rancho Dolores, Double Head Cabbage, Bermudian Landing, Flowers Bank, Lemonal, Isabella Bank, Burrell Boom, San Hill, Crooked Tree, and Lord’s Bank. Teams from Carmelita Village in the Orange Walk district and Belmopan in the Cayo district also played in the competition. However, cricket has been played on and off over the years in other communities including Hattieville, Scotland Half Moon, Maskal, Belize City in Belize district, Chan Pineridge and Douglas villages in Orange Walk district and Placencia and Pomana, in Stann Creek district. In 2019 a male T20 competition was hosted by the BNCA. Also, in 2019, a female competition with four teams from Double Head Cabbage, Bermudian Landing and Rancho Dolores, Lemonal and Flowers Bank was organized by the BNCA. Flowers Bank were the winner. This competition helped to select, train and prepare Belize’s first national female cricket team. The team travelled to Costa Rica December 12, 2019 and won the Mid Season International Tournament (Women) beating Costa Rico five of six matches. Belize’s first international cricket exposure was when a team representing British Honduras had debuted April 4, 1960, when Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) visited after its 1959–60 tour of the West Indies. The visiting team built a cricket pitch in Belize City which adopted the club’s name. Forty-four years later Belize played it first international tournament which was a qualifier for the 2004 ICC Americas Championship. Then two years later in 2006 Belize hosted and won the first Central American Championship (CAC) tournament. The other participating countries were Mexico and Costa Rica. Belize has participated in three of the seven CAC Page 2 tournaments to date and won twice, in 2006 and 2019. The CAC games played in 2019 were ICC official Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. See results at Central American Cricket Championships – Live Cricket Schedules, Updates, Results | ESPN.com. Some developments of the sport in the last few years include the training and certification of 18 coaches at level one and 14 umpires also at level one by trainers from Cricket West Indies (CWI). Training of scorers continues with plans that all official BNCA matches will be scored using the CricHeroes scoring app for 2021 season and going forward. The game is also currently being introduced in primary and secondary school curricula to grow the sport in the country. This was done in the past but not sustained over the years. There are many interesting and entertaining stories of competitions, matches, and players in the Belize River Valley that still live on today. Some of these can be seen on the cricket website at http://cricket.idealabstudios.com/.
